Inside Multnomah County's Climate Lawsuit

Published Nov 11, 2024

In 2021, Multnomah County, Oregon faced a deadly heat dome, where temperatures reached as high as 116F and more than 60 people were killed in that county alone.

Through attribution science, this extreme heat event has been directly linked to fossil fuel-driven climate change.

Now, Multnomah County is seeking justice through the courts in an ongoing lawsuit against the fossil fuel industry, the industry most responsible for climate damages and deception. The suit specifically names companies including Chevron, ExxonMobil, and ConocoPhillips, trade associations including the American Petroleum Institute and the Western States Petroleum Association, consultants including McKinsey and Company, and utilities including NW Natural, as defendants.
