Carbon Stocks on Land Subject to Indonesia's Forest Moratorium

This technical paper and two-page summary were released on November 30, 2011 at a side event of the international climate negotiations in Durban, South Africa. The subject of these papers is Indonesia's recently announced two-year moratorium on new concessions for the conversion of primary forests and peat lands.

The moratorium could be an important step towards achieving the bold goal Indonesia has set for its mitigation activities: to reduce global warming emissions by 26 percent or more by 2020. The study examines the Presidential Instruction that established the moratorium and quantifies the coverage, exemptions, enforcement, and additionality of the moratorium.
