WASHINGTON (June 28, 2018)—The U.S. Senate today passed a bipartisan farm bill proposal 86 to 11. The Senate proposal comes a week after the House of Representatives just barely passed its partisan bill by two votes, and included evidence-based investments to support farmers and rural communities. The final bill should include policies and programs with strong track records of success, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).
Below is a statement by Ricardo Salvador, director of the Food and Environment Program at UCS.
“We look to the conference committee to ensure that final farm bill maintains the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and includes other measures proven to stimulate regional economies, provide farmers the tools they need to protect soil and water quality, and ensure all families can put food on the table.”
