WASHINGTON (February 8, 2019)—Earlier this week, ExxonMobil released its 2019 Energy and Carbon Summary, a report that assesses the risks that climate change poses to the corporation.
Below is a statement by Kathy Mulvey, the fossil fuel accountability campaign manager at the Union of Concerned Scientists.
“Regrettably, ExxonMobil’s report met my low expectations. Instead of demonstrating that it understands the reality of climate change and the need for swift and deep cuts in emissions, the oil giant recycled much of its climate risk report from last year. It completely ignored the two landmark climate reports released since then, one by the UN and the other by federal agencies, that made it clear we have about a decade left to tackle the problem head on or face a world of hurt.
“ExxonMobil continues to bet that the world will fail to meet the Paris climate agreement’s global temperature goals, refusing to map out a plan to bring global warming emissions from its operations and from the use of its products to net zero by mid-century.
“Shareholders have every right to be fed up with this exercise, as the company tinkers around the edges instead of taking the bold action that is needed to prevent the worst effects of climate change.
“It’s also frustrating to see that the company signaled no intention to break with its trade associations and other industry groups that spread disinformation about climate science and policy. ExxonMobil swings and misses again. Unfortunately, when it strikes out, we all lose.”
